Spring is here and we are getting ready to "fly". Have you ever imagined what it might feel like to pilot a plane yourself ? Go to your local airfield and ask someone there: "Can anyone learn to fly?" That is what I did once and I was introduced to a young man who invited me to take a ride with him. Climbing into the narrow cockpit was the first surprise. My new found friend Neil, explained the instruments, and when I asked: "where is the parachute?" he laughed, there is none of course. Then Neil opened a tiny window and shouted "Clear Prop" and started the engine. The tiny plane shook and vibrated while making an unimaginable noise. I was filled with terror, as we rolled towards the runway. Before I knew what had happened, we were up in the air our mind expanding with the wondrous feeling of flight. That was my answer to "can anyone learn to fly”, and I signed up for flight lessons. My first solo flight, cross country flying to airports in other states, ( I once landed on the wrong airport ), and the comradeship of other pilots gave me many years of pleasure. Yes, you too can learn how to fly.
